The analysis of census-type documents
Local Population Studies Number 2 (Spring 1969)
Local population studies usually centre on the parish register, which gives a running record of vital events. The register, however, cannot tell us either how many people were alive in the parish at any one time or how many individuals lived together as families or household groups. To answer questions of this kind, for example, whether old people usually lived with their sons or daughters or in lonely isolation, we need a census of the population.
